Fixed braces, often referred to simply as “braces,” are orthodontic devices used to correct misaligned teeth. Unlike removable braces, they are attached to the teeth.
• Brackets: Small squares bonded directly to the front of each tooth with a special dental adhesive.
• Archwires: Thin metal wires that run through the brackets. Exerting pressure on the teeth to move them into the desired position.
• Bands: Metal rings that fit around the back teeth. Providing additional anchorage for the braces.
• Elastic ties: Small rubber bands that hold the archwire to the brackets.
The primary goal of fixed braces is to apply continuous, gentle pressure over time to slowly move the teeth into their proper positions. There are different stages to the teeth straightening journey.
Initial Fitting: Brackets are fitted to your teeth and an archwire is inserted. This is secured with elastic ties or metal ligatures.
Adjustments: Regular visits are necessary for adjustments. During these visits, your Dentist tightens or replaces the archwires to continue applying the right amount of pressure.
Alignment: Over time, the teeth gradually shift into alignment. This process can take anywhere from a few months to a couple of years, depending on the severity of the misalignment.
Retention: When your are happy with the position of your teeth, your braces are removed. To maintain your new smile, you will be given options for retainers to wear.
If you’re considering treetment with fixed braces, it’s important to know what to expect throughout the teeth straightening process:
Initial Discomfort: When first fitted, and after each adjustment, you may experience some discomfort or soreness as your teeth begin to move. This is normal and usually subsides after a few days.
Oral Hygiene: Maintaining excellent oral hygiene is crucial. Food particles can easily become trapped around the brackets and wires, so regular brushing and interdental cleaning are essential to prevent cavities and gum disease.
Dietary Adjustments: You’ll need to avoid certain foods that can damage the braces, such as hard candies, nuts, and sticky sweets. Eating softer foods and cutting hard items into smaller pieces can help prevent issues.
Regular Appointments: Frequent visits for adjustments are necessary to ensure the treatment is progressing as planned.
